In Calgary right now sitting in a bar called Flames Central where the second stop of this year’s Red Bull Thre3 Style will be held tonight. Really excited for this! Despite the multiple, giant Flames logos that absolutely overwhelm you in this bar (despite not following hockey, I am, by default, a Canucks fan), this spot looks like a really rad spot to shoot.
Yesterday was cool. Curtis Santiago, the awesome Fokus Productions crew, Red Bull’s Kenny Mac and I went up to Banff to see Skratch Bastid destroy a wednesday night there. We stayed at the Fox Hotel which had a really great hot tub (pool) and wicked old b&w photographs of people climbing mountains in old gear. Old climbing gear back then = normal clothes and shoes. These photos were really, really good. It makes me wonder why they aren’t in Canadian art history textbooks, and instead people have to learn about the Group of Seven for eons and eons. I feel sorry for Canadians who grow up having to memorize that shit.
After Bastid’s show we adjourned to a spot the locals called the ‘hippie house.’ It certainly lived up to its name – a literally underground dubstep obstacle course party. Sweaty, grimey, grindey. Admittedly I love those kinds of parties.
Speaking of hippies, here’s something I hate – selective colouring. I know I’ve bitched about this new Subrosa ad on thecomeup and twitter, but honestly that shit is the worst. Why anyone would ruin an awesome photo of an awesome rider doing an awesome trick with the cheesiest, most gimmicky technique is beyond me. Please do not do selective colouring, it looks like shit.
Anyway, I sounded out my thoughts on this subject to Subrosa who promptly owned me with this amazing reply. Remember y’all, talk smack on the internet and you might just get pwned.
