And on another note, visit davidlang.tumblr.com for a GIF animation of Paul Murphy (Skratch Bastid) getting his turntablisms on at red bull thre3style quebec city.
I can’t attach that GIF here or it’d be too wide so here’s a picture taken in Vancouver two nights ago.

Had a really fun shoot at m0851 today. Then photographed Flying Lotus obliterating Vancouver. After it was over I ended up on this long, bizarre, and quite fun adventure to get home. Documented the whole thing… Shot like a few thousand pics today. Need sleep bye!

Vina bought me a copy of Burtynksy’s Oil today. Thank you Vina! Really stoked, been wanting this book for so long! =]

Happy Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, and Olympic gold-at-home-drought-ending-day! Even though I’m not Canadian by blood or passport, I’ve lived here for the past 7 years and this really feels like home. Walking around Vancouver today was really really exciting – it’s amazing to see this city transformed. Been totally glued to the TV and twitter just watching everyone’s reactions hehe.

Red Bull Thre3Style has been amazing so far. The Edmonton party had such great energy and to top it off I managed to hang out with friend and BMXer Jaumell Campbell and his super rad house of animals afterwards. A few days later I traveled east again for Red Bull Thre3Style Toronto which was off the hook madness. Here’s a pic of a hand from there.

Next up: Flying Lotus in Vancouver on tuesday, Red Bull Thre3Style Quebec City on thursday, Thre3Style Montreal friday, and Thre3Style Moncton on Saturday. Will probably be doing more shoots in between those – the shutter actuations don’t stop.

Back to Olympic talk. Now that we have that first gold out the way, we need to focus on getting more. When you see Olivier Jean and Charles Hamelin flying around the speed skating track, remember to cheer extra hard!

Off to Edmonton in a few hours for the Thre3 Style stop there, git rady for more madness!

In Calgary right now sitting in a bar called Flames Central where the second stop of this year’s Red Bull Thre3 Style will be held tonight. Really excited for this! Despite the multiple, giant Flames logos that absolutely overwhelm you in this bar (despite not following hockey, I am, by default, a Canucks fan), this spot looks like a really rad spot to shoot.

Yesterday was cool. Curtis Santiago, the awesome Fokus Productions crew, Red Bull’s Kenny Mac and I went up to Banff to see Skratch Bastid destroy a wednesday night there. We stayed at the Fox Hotel which had a really great hot tub (pool) and wicked old b&w photographs of people climbing mountains in old gear. Old climbing gear back then = normal clothes and shoes. These photos were really, really good. It makes me wonder why they aren’t in Canadian art history textbooks, and instead people have to learn about the Group of Seven for eons and eons. I feel sorry for Canadians who grow up having to memorize that shit.

After Bastid’s show we adjourned to a spot the locals called the ‘hippie house.’ It certainly lived up to its name – a literally underground dubstep obstacle course party. Sweaty, grimey, grindey. Admittedly I love those kinds of parties.

Speaking of hippies, here’s something I hate – selective colouring. I know I’ve bitched about this new Subrosa ad on thecomeup and twitter, but honestly that shit is the worst. Why anyone would ruin an awesome photo of an awesome rider doing an awesome trick with the cheesiest, most gimmicky technique is beyond me. Please do not do selective colouring, it looks like shit.

Anyway, I sounded out my thoughts on this subject to Subrosa who promptly owned me with this amazing reply. Remember y’all, talk smack on the internet and you might just get pwned.

In news very unrelated to that picture above, ESPN has a series called Sports Science and it’s pretty interesting to see action sports in a different light. This episode tracks the movement of Simon Dumont’s head and eyes when he does tricks. Brings to light all those times of trying to do 3s and people said “tilt your head!” And there’s another where Shaun White does the double cork and they prove that it does, in fact, look like a double cork, and the presenter ends the video off with a punchline for the ages.

The next athlete Sports Science should do an episode on? Canadian shredder Drew Bezanson. His riding is from some other planet…

This is the Bell center in Montréal, at my first NHL game ever! I quite like how it turned out, thinking of doing it as a print for the Cheaper Show. Strangely enough this photo is from the same series as the photos of an F1 car driving on ice. Edited so many shots from that series these pass two days, pretty sure I actually dreamt in photoshop. Will publish those here soon!

So yeah, the tablet comes out in like 7.5 hours. It will be fun. Publishing is going to be turned on its head yet again. Hopefully everyone clues in and really gives a good shot at publishing for the tablet. Anyone who thinks that printing on paper is a sustainable form of publishing is smoking crack. The inevitable truth is that everything will be digital and everyone will be beige. Better to adapt now than late.

Started editing photos from the Frozen One series again. I really like contrast so an overcast day on a frozen lake is a bit of a nightmare. However, the detail to bring shadows out is there on the sensor, but getting contrast out of ice without making everything looking like star trek is kinda hard sometimes. It’s been fun so far though.

Right now one of the things I’ve been doing on this series is making exorbitantly S-curved curves layers with a bias to the dark, then going to Image > Shadows/Highlights and using that tool along with masks to bring details back (both in the dark and bright regions).
